What is numerology?
Numerology is the study of the symbolic relationship between numbers and events, names, and patterns in the world. What is a numerology calculator?
A numerology calculator converts the letters (and numbers) in a name or phrase into their corresponding numerical values, adds them up, and reduces the total to a meaningful number. The calculator on this page uses the Chaldean system — the oldest and most widely used method in South Asian and traditional name numerology.
In the Chaldean chart, each letter of the alphabet is assigned a value from 1 to 8. The number 9 is considered sacred and is not assigned to any letter — it only appears as a result. Digits in the input (1–9) are counted at their face value.
Once the letters are converted, the values are summed into a compound number. The compound is then reduced to a single digit by adding its digits together. If that process passes through 11, 22, or 33 — the master numbers — those are preserved as significant in their own right.
The calculator also computes two sub-numbers: the Soul Urge (sum of vowels only, representing your inner motivation) and the Personality number (sum of consonants only, representing how others perceive you). Together, these three numbers give you the numerology profile of any name.

How the calculator works
Each letter in the input is mapped to a number using the Chaldean alphabet chart. The values are added together to give a compound total, and the compound total is then reduced to a single digit by adding its digits together. If the reduction lands on 11, 22, or 33, those are kept as master numbers.

Digits (1–9) are counted at face value. Spaces, hyphens, and symbols are shown in the breakdown but do not count toward the total.
Compound number vs. reduced number
The compound number is the raw sum of all letter values before any reduction. It captures the texture of the specific letters used — two names that reduce to the same single digit can have very different compounds. Many traditional readings spend time on the compound for that reason.
The reduced number is the final single digit (1–9), or a preserved master number (11, 22, 33). It is treated as the underlying note of the name — a quick, broad description of the energy.
In practice, read both. The compound describes how the energy expresses itself; the reduced describes what the underlying tone is.
Soul Urge and Personality numbers
The calculator also splits letters into vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and consonants:
- Soul Urge Number — sum of vowels only. Often interpreted as inner motivation, private desire, what fulfils you beneath the surface.
- Personality Number — sum of consonants only. Often interpreted as first impression, outer style, how others perceive you.
Together with the full name number, these three give the basic numerology snapshot of a name.

How to calculate a name number manually
- Write the name clearly using the spelling you want to test.
- Use the Chaldean chart to assign a number to each letter.
- Add all the letter values together to get the compound total.
- Reduce the total by adding its digits, unless the result is 11, 22, or 33.
- Read the meaning of both the compound and the reduced number.
